Why Veteran‑Centered Care Matters

Over 300,000 Veterans die each year in the United States. However, 95% of Veterans receive health care outside of the VA at the end of life. Therefore, many Veterans and their families are not aware of the end‑of‑life services and benefits they are entitled to.

About the We Honor Veterans Program

We Honor Veterans was launched in 2010 by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to address the growing need for Veteran‑centered end‑of‑life care, especially as Veterans from different service eras are aging and require access to Veteran‑centric palliative and hospice care. The We Honor Veterans program encourages respectful inquiry, compassionate listening, and grateful acknowledgment, coupled with Veteran‑centric education of healthcare staff caring for Veterans.
